An office move for Charlbury-based disablity gaming charity SpecialEffect

The Brief

SpecialEffect is a charity that helps people with disabilities through the use of gaming technology. A few years ago, they were based in a very small office in Sheep Street, Charlbury, which was starting to become a squeeze. They wanted to expand and to be able to offer disability parking at the office, something they were unable to do at their current location. They found a property just outside of Charlbury on the Cornbury Park estate and then picked up the phone to House & Carriage.

Using the right company for the office move

SpecialEffect had moved offices in the past and did the hard work themselves the last time. Pam Elkerton, the PA to SpecialEffect’s CEO, remarked that she would ‘never again’ do this as it took time, strained backs, was stressful, took a lot of trips back and forth, and was just ‘not what we’re trained to do’. This time around, she chose to get the professionals in to do the job.

Meeting the office move challenge

House & Carriage talked Pam through what would happen during the move and discussed the challenges:

  • There were heavy desks and office furniture that would require taking apart for the move

  • They needed the move to be speedy, so as not to take too much time out of the working day

  • They had valuable equipment (computers, monitors, specialist technology, etc.) that needed special care and to be covered by moving insurance

  • They were a charity so needed an affordable and flexible service

The House and Carriage Approach

After going through SpecialEffect’s needs House & Carriage put together a service package that included removals, some packing and packing materials (boxes and blankets) and insurance – all priced cost effectively based on their charitable status.

On move day, Pam was very impressed with the team’s quick turnaround time and friendly professionalism, saying: ‘They turned up in good time, and they were very speedy, efficient and polite”. House & Carriage made sure that everything was handled with care and packed well to ensure there would be no breakages during transit.

Safe, space saving storage

Since the big office move, SpecialEffect has used House & Carriage to store some of their items. They like how House & Carriage endeavour to use all the space possible in a container by breaking down items and storing them in a manner that makes optimum use of the space, keeping costs down.

We also hold an annual Christmas drinks evening, raising money for SpecialEffect and for ROSY (another local charity) which is always well received.
