Storage, storage and more storage: 10 reasons to store your belongings elsewhere

There are a lot of reasons why you might need self-storage solutions to keep your personal belongings or your business items safe. Here are 10 events that could leave you needing some extra storage capacity.

  1. Storage for…downsizing
In the UK, living space is becoming more and more of a premium. We now have an average of 85 square metres compared with 115 square metres in Holland and 137 square metres in Denmark (RIBA quoted in Metro.co.uk). It’s possible that your next home might be a bit smaller or may not have the same amount of attic /cupboard space as your current home. Why not put some of your bigger items in a safe place until you buy or rent a place they can all fit into?

  2. Storage for…decluttering
“It is estimated that only 10% of home buyers can visualise the potential of a home. That means 90% are not going to be able to look past dirt, clutter, and imperfections.”

When it’s time to sell your house, it can be really off-putting to potential buyers if it looks crammed full of stuff, but there might be some pieces you just can’t stand to get rid of in order to make more space. For these items, you might want to use a temporary storage solution, to keep your surfaces and space free for photo opportunities and viewings.

  3. Storage for…child’s play
From babies, to toddlers, to little kids, to big kids – it’s amazing how quickly toys, beds and clothes are outgrown by your family. Yet you might want to keep them for sentimental reasons or for any new family additions. Self-storage is a great way to keep your kid’s things until you need them again.

  4. Storage for…empty nesters
After your children finally leave home, you could be stuck with a whole pile of belongings they’ve left behind. They might want these at some point in the future, but don’t have room for them just yet. While they’re away at university or starting out in a tiny flat, you could reclaim their bedroom for something else. Storage is a great option if you want to get the room emptied and repurposed, yet keep all those precious bits they want to take with them… at some point!

  5. Storage for…office space
Offices often have extra furniture: technology, stock and marketing materials that might need squirrelling away for another day. Many businesses don’t have warehouse space to store archive records or surplus stock, so storage is a good idea. It’s a much better solution than having to find and rent out bigger premises when your business starts to grow.

  6. Storage for…the seasons
Over 8 million Christmas trees are sold each year in the UK, that’s a lot of baubles! If your house is overtaken by the spirit of Christmas, or if you have too much summer stuff like beach umbrellas, windbreaks and inflatables laying around in the wintertime, then seasonal storage could be your solution.

  7. Storage for…leaving on a jet plane
You could be planning to relocate abroad for a few years but you have things you don’t want to pay to ship, or don’t have room for in your new place overseas. Why not store the things you can’t take with you until your return, or until you have a big enough place to ship it over to?

  8. Storage for…room on the driveway
Most homes come with space for one car, and most families have at least two. If you need temporary or long term parking for your cars or even your caravan/mobile home, some storage solutions even offer space for transport.

  9. Storage for…construction
If you’re planning on modernising your tired property or adding an extension for some extra room, you might need to store some things so they don’t get ruined, or in the way, while you’re decorating and renovating.

  10. Storage for…an exhibition
Certain conferences and exhibitions are probably important events in your business calendar. Conference materials and exhibition stands can take up a lot of space that small businesses just don’t have enough room for, so to free up space, why not transfer it all into a container or locker, and get it when you want it?

You can also store specialist items such as paintings, all under conditions that are right for heirlooms and important art works.
